Helicobacter pylori -- not a good bug after all

Article Abstract:

The link between Helicobacter pylori and stomach cancer may be as strong as the link between smoking and lung cancer. Since many people infected with the bacterium have no symptoms, population screening may be cost effective if it can prevent at least 30% of the stomach cancer cases that would develop without screening.

Helicobacter pylori in the stomach - a paradox unmasked

Article Abstract:

The age at which a person becomes infected with Helicobacter (H.) pylori could explain why the bacterium causes different manifestations. H. pylori has been linked to both stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers. A 1996 study found that people with stomach ulcers have a greater risk of developing stomach cancer whereas those with duodenal ulcers have a reduced risk. When H. pylori infects a child, it often leads to a type of gastritis that can cause both stomach ulcers and cancer. When an adult contracts H. pylori, this gastritis does not occur, but the adult may develop duodenal ulcer.
