Panel Predicts Shortfall in Care for the Aged

Article Abstract:

A panel convened by the Nursing Institute at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing will issue a series of recommendations in April, 2001 to prevent a future shortage of nurses. Because women are free to choose many professions, there may not be enough nurses in 2020 to care for aging baby boomers.

Scientists probe aldosterone's role in hypertension and heart disease

Article Abstract:

The study aims to explore whether therapeutic actions against aldosterone, an adrenal gland hormone can benefit patients with hypertension, ischemic heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and renal disease. Aldosterone is a mineralocorticoid that acts on renal mineralocorticoid receptors and regulates sodium and potassium levels to maintain proper blood pressure and blood volume.

Panel clarifies NSAID benefits and risks

The American Gastroenterology Association has compiled a set of recommendations from a cross-disciplinary panel to serve as a template for treating patients with nonsterodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) from aspirin to the cyclooxygenase 2 inhibitors. The document focuses on gastrointestinal toxicity associated with NSAID use and also highlights cardiovascular risks and benefits associated with these medications.
