Folic acid antagonists during pregnancy and the risk of birth defects

Article Abstract:

Folic acid alone may lower the risk of birth defects, as shown by a study of 6,932 babies whose mothers took drugs that inhibit folic acid formation while they were pregnant. Compared to 8,387 other babies, the babies exposed to folic acid inhibitors had two to three times the risk of birth defects.

Selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors and risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to see whether persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) is associated with substantial infant mortality and morbidity. The results show that neither the use of selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) before the 20th week of gestation nor the use of non-SSRI antidepressant drugs at any time during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of PPHN.
