Adventures with the lab box: a modern medical fable

Article Abstract:

Managed care has increased the time and the costs of simple lab tests needed by most physicians. Many tests once performed by the physician in the office in under ten minutes are now sent to labs which take 24 hours to deliver results. Costs have increased, paperwork is ridiculous and patients could be in danger. Physicians need to oppose managed care's moves towards using too many labs, too far away which take too much time and cost too much money.

Article Abstract:

Many states are feeling increased pressure to initiate health care system reforms in order to straighten out insurance marketing practices and to improve the Medicaid systems. The failure of health care reform to pass on the federal level provides physicians with additional opportunities to participate in reforms on the state level. Several tips are presented regarding ways in which physicians can become involved in state health care legislation.
