Critical to success

Article Abstract:

UK grade E nurses are playing a vital role in the development of critical care, revealing a need for higher standards in education and continual learning, according to a report by the UK Audit Commission. The report found grade E nurses were being asked to undertake an increasingly specialist set of tasks within critical care, such as the removal of chest drains and the analysis of blood gas levels. A six-month training course is recommended by the Intensive Care Society, which enables nurses to perform more effectively on the ward.

The battle of all mothers

Article Abstract:

Plans to locate a new 15 million pounds sterling maternity unit at Royal Victoria Hospital, which is in strongly Republican West Belfast, Northern Ireland, have attracted controversy. If the plans go ahead, the new unit will replace services currently operating at the Royal Maternity Hospital and the Jubilee Hospital. Unionist politicians have accused Northern Ireland Assembly Health Minister Bairbre de Brun of sectarian bias, stating that she is constructing a Catholic hospital for Catholic people in West Belfast.

Labour MP Andrew Love has raised the issue of the risk to children of untested and licensed drugs in parliament.
