Current considerations in patients with coexistent diabetes and hypertension

Article Abstract:

Patients with coexistent diabetes and hypertension require careful management from their primary health care providers as target organ damage is faster in the presence of hypertension. Health care providers should educate themselves as to current care options including newly developed drugs and treatment programs as well as their patients' special needs. Treatments should focus primarily on the prevention of cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, diabetic retinopathy and cardiomyopathy, and death.

The hypertensive elder: a review for the primary care provider

Article Abstract:

Elderly Americans are at a high risk for hypertension and early diagnosis and treatment is an important factor in health care management for the older population. Physiological changes, functional difficulties, and use of a wider range of prescription drugs are some contributing factors to hypertension in the elderly population. Health care providers should educate themselves about current diagnosis and treatment techniques for elderly patients.

Mibefradil: A New Twist to the Calcium Channel Antagonist

Article Abstract:

Mibefradil dihydrochloride (Posicor) is a calcium channel antagonist whose chemical and pharmacological properties are unique. The drug can be used for treatment of angina, hypertension, and perhaps left ventricular hypertrophy. Mibefradil dihydrochloride does not possess adverse effects that other calcium antagonists possess. However, it should not be used with beta-blockers in elderly patients.
