Deliver us from temptation

Article Abstract:

Medical suppliers target nurses with the free samples of their products but nurses should realise that accepting free gifts could lose them their jobs or get them struck off the professional register. Doctors can accept hospitality from suppliers but the event they attend has to be educational and the amount spent by the company has to be reasonable. Supplies company, Coloplast, has been banned from an RCN conference because it has been putting nurses in a difficult ethical position by offering rewards for prescribing its own products.

Opinions shift

Article Abstract:

Many nurses prefer to work three 12-hour shifts, and then have four days off in the rest of the week, rather than working shorter shifts on more days. In this way, they can spend more time with their families, and some also do agency work on their days off. Research has indicated that 12-hour shifts do not necessarily make nurses more tired than traditional eight-hour shifts, and that longer hours do not lead to more accidents.
