Skeletal muscle respiratory uncoupling prevents diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance in mice

Article Abstract:

Research reveals that manipulation of the respiratory system at metabolic level in mice lead to decreased obesity, increased response to insulin, and better glucose tolerance. Data show that transgenic mice expressing the mitochondrial uncoupling protein exhibit higher oxygen consumption and low obesity and type 2 diabetic conditions.

Dexamethasone induction of hypertention and diabetes is PPAR-alpha dependent in LDL receptor-null mice

Article Abstract:

Hypertension and diabetes are common side effects of glucocorticoid treatment. To determine whether peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-alpha mediates these sequelae, mice deficient in low-density lipoprotien receptor with or without PPAR-alpha, were treated chronically with dexamethasone.

TZDs and diabetes: Testing the waters

Article Abstract:

Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) drug used as medication for type 2 diabetes also causes life-threatening fluid retention and edema. Amiloride is a diuretic drug that inhibits salt absorption in the collecting duct and thus prevents fluid retention and edema.
