Diagnosing protracted submasseteric abscess: the role of computed tomography

Article Abstract:

Computed tomography (CT) may be useful in diagnosing submasseteric abscesses. Such infections can form within the zone of insertion of the masseter muscle of the jaw. A 43-year-old woman with an 18-month history of episodic right facial swelling following restorative dental work was definitively diagnosed by CT as having a submasseteric abscess. She was initially diagnosed with chronic parotitis, an infection of the parotid gland which is next to the masseter muscle. The infection was surgically drained and treated with antibiotics. It may have originated from a contaminated needle injected during the restorative dental work.

Using ultrasonography to diagnose Sjogren's syndrome

Article Abstract:

Patients with Sjogren's syndrome may have distinct diagnostic findings on ultrasonographic imaging of the parotid glands. Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune condition that causes mouth dryness and inadequate saliva production. Researchers used an ultrasound device to view the parotid salivary glands of nine patients with Sjogren's syndrome secondary to other autoimmune diseases. Each of the patients had distinct low-echo patterns of the parotid glands indicating salivary duct dilatation or the accumulation of white blood cells in the salivary glands.

Cat-scratch disease: considerations for dentistry
