Dispute over advertising of specialties heats up

Article Abstract:

Physicians in California are battling over a law that limits board certification of advertising for specialties and subspecialties to the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Otolaryngologists who perform plastic surgery and other emerging specialists not recognized by the ABMS have invoked the state's rule-making process in an effort to achieve legitimacy. So far, they have been successfully opposed by plastic surgeons, who lobbied for the law to begin with.

Can medical schools influence choice of specialty?

Article Abstract:

Medical schools are being urging students to enter primary care fields rather than other specialties. A University of Michigan survey shows that students are more likely to be influenced by family and friends. However, a study by the General Accounting Office concludes that schools which stress family medicine are likely to find recruits. Only 14.6% of medical students chose to be generalists in 1992, but the number has since risen to about 20%.
