Do the right thing

Article Abstract:

The introduction of evidence based care into nursing practice will help nurses to be valued for their work and expertise. The increasing promotion of evidence based care has led to discussions on the quality and nature of evidence. Evidence based care may be hard to introduce as policies of care, for conditions such as pressure sores, have never been satisfactorily established. The UK government has set up two bodies to look into and support effective practice for nurses in the UK. Information packs on clinical practice for nurses are due to be published in Jul 1998.

Theory is coming home

Article Abstract:

A new report entitled 'Scope in Practice', published by UKCC in February 1997, is a follow-up to the 'Scope of Professional Practice' document, published in 1992. The authors of the report interviewed midwives, health visitors and nurses to find out how the Professional Practice document has changed the way they care for their patients. Comments include that it is difficult to put the policies into practice and that it does not have a high enough profile. The document has been a valuable tool for nurses as it reinforces good working practices.

Clinical effectiveness?

Article Abstract:

Many nurses, health visitors and midwives are interested in the concept of clinical effectiveness due to the opportunity it presents to improve the quality of care. The promotion of the concept is based on the need to ensure that health care is based on evidence, and to encourage the use of resources. The NHS Executive has indicated that randomized controlled trials provide the best form of evidence for the guidance of practice, but other experts indicate the validity for nursing of other forms of evidence, including patients' opinions.
