Does screening save lives? Why wait for people to show symptoms of a disease if screening can identify it earlier?

Article Abstract:

The National Health Service is planning increased screening for breast, cervical and prostate cancers and also for diabetes and chlamydia, a common sexually transmitted disease that may lead to cervical cancer. The pros and cons of increased screening are discussed, including costs and increased false positive results.

The threat of bioterrorism has meant that hospital emergency teams in the United Kingdom must devise plans for the treatment of mass casualties from biological or chemical weapons. Symptoms associated with biological or chemical weapons are described.
