"Doin' politics": linking policy and politics in nursing

Article Abstract:

Nursing leaders must understand the dynamics of the health policy sector to effectively influence public policies that affect nursing. Nursing policies are part of the broad health policy sector, which is becoming larger and more complex. Displacement of policy objectives is another factor in the formulation of health policy. Displacement is a cyclical phenomenon that creates opportunities to secure resources and influence. The policy environment influences the goals of policy change and the political plans for meeting those goals.

Nursing's Agenda for Health Care Reform: policy, politics, and power through professional leadership

Article Abstract:

The document 'Nursing's Agenda for Health Care Reform' was a highlight of nursing's contribution to the health care reform debate that occurred from 1991 to 1994. The policy positions in the agenda brought increased public recognition of the effectiveness of the nursing profession in developing medical policy. This visibility was a victory for the profession even though Congress failed to pass comprehensive health care reform. Nurses must continue their political role in working to protect Medicare and Medicaid.

The politics of advanced practice

Article Abstract:

Emerging health care delivery models offer nurses a unique opportunity to promote advanced practice nursing. Advanced practice nurses (APNs) will play a key role in the delivery of integrated health care. The nursing profession needs to understand the politics of the heath care system and health care policy to develop power strategies that are successful in influencing health policy. Both individual APNs and professional APN groups must adopt action strategies to ensure a leadership role for APNs.
