Streamlining documentation: an opportunity to reduce costs and increase nurse clinicians' time with patients

Article Abstract:

Documenting details of patient care can be effectively managed by nurses. The redesign of documentation procedures will minimize time spent away from the patient while reducing the cost of medical care. Innovative approaches include avoiding narratives in favor of more standardized formats, installing automated systems, simpler discharge forms, and evaluating the changes or implementations. Such new efficiency may produce time savings of 50% compared to the traditional way of charting.

Staff surveys: setting the stage for work restructuring

Article Abstract:

Polling staff members can be an important element in successfully restructuring time spent in the work environment. Staff members can contribute important information about what processes currently work, what can be changed or deleted, and what elements of the work environment are of value. Soliciting input from staff members indicates that management values their opinions and encourages staff members to actively participate in the change process.
