Early-onset and late-onset neonatal group B streptococcal disease-United States, 1996-2004

Article Abstract:

The guidelines for the prevention of perinatal invasive group B streptococcal (GBS) disease have recommended universal screening of pregnant women for rectovaginal GBS colonization at 35-37 weeks' gestation and administrating intrapartum antimicrobial prophylaxis to carriers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has analyzed the data from the Active Bacterial Core surveillance system from 1996-2004 to assess the impact of the guidelines on multistate trends in neonatal GBS disease incidence.
