Efavirenz- and adefovir dipivoxil-based salvage therapy in highly treatment-experienced patients: clinical and genotypic predictors of virologic response

Article Abstract:

The drugs efavirenz and adefovir dipivoxil appear to be beneficial in HIV patients who no longer respond to nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors. This was the conclusion of a study of 33 HIV patients. Patients who had taken non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors were less likely to benefit.

Genotypic correlates of a virologic response to stavudine after zidovudine monotherapy

Article Abstract:

Stavudine will not be effective in HIV patients whose virus has more than one gene mutation for resistance to zidovudine. This probably occurs because resistance to zidovudine also confers resistance to stavudine.

Nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor phenotypic hypersusceptibility can be demonstrated in different assays

Article Abstract:

A study aims to determine whether nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) hypersusceptibility could be demonstrated in other types of phenotypic assays, including multicycle assays and enzyme inhibition assays. Conclusions reveal that NNRTI hypersusceptibility is readily seen in multicycle susceptibility assays and in enzyme inhibition assays.
