Emergence of antiretroviral therapy resistance-associated primary mutations among drug-naive HIV-1-infected individuals in rural western Cameroon

Article Abstract:

The prevalence of antiretroviral therapy (ART) resistance-associated mutations among HIV-1 strains in western Cameroon was evaluated by genotypically analyzing strains isolated from drug-naive individuals, extracting proviral DNA from 54 blood samples. It was established that primary mutations of the HIV-1 protease existed in drug-naive patients in rural western Cameroon, despite little use of protease inhibitors.

Genetic diversity of HIV type 1 in rural Eastern Cameroon

Article Abstract:

The presence of genotypic HIV-1 variants circulating in eastern Cameroon from blood samples of 57 HIV-1-infected individuals attending 3 local health centers in the bordering rural villages with Central African Republic (CAR) collected and analyzed phylogenetically is monitored. The study showed that the findings strongly suggest that this part of Cameroon is a potential hotspot of HIV-1 recombination.

Genotypic resistance of archived and circulating viral strains in the blood of treated HIV-infected individuals

Article Abstract:

The patterns of antiretroviral resistance of HIV-1 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and in plasma of patients whose therapeutic regimen is failing are evaluated. The results have shown that the cellular compartment containing an archive of the resistance variant has made the HIV reservoir an interesting substrate for the analysis of the resistance potential in a given patient.
