Emergency mitral valve replacement in the setting of severe pulmonary hypertension and acute cardiovascular decompensation after evacuation of twins at fifteen weeks' gestation

Article Abstract:

A case is presented of a pregnant woman who required emergency heart valve replacement following a second-trimester abortion. She was seen by a physician at 15 weeks with symptoms of high blood pressure in the lungs and heart valve disease due to rheumatic fever. An abortion was performed and her condition deteriorated. Surgeons performed emergency mitral valve replacement and she subsequently recovered. Women with mitral valve disease are usually advised to avoid becoming pregnant.
