Gonorrhea in Male Adolescents and Young Adults in Newark, New Jersey

Article Abstract:

Casual sex and promiscuity are risk factors for gonorrhea in men. This was the conclusion of researchers who surveyed men 15 to 29 years old who visited a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic in Newark, New Jersey. These men were more likely to have casual sex than men with no STD, and were also more likely to use drugs during sex and to have been incarcerated. Many did not use condoms correctly when they used them at all. In 1995, the gonorrhea rate in Newark was five times the US rate.

Enzyme-Linked Immunospot Assay for the Diagnosis of Active Treponema pallidum Infection During the Various Stages of Syphilis

Article Abstract:

An enzyme-linked immunospot assay called ELISPOT may be able to distinguish a current syphilis infection from a past infection. Researchers used ELISPOT to test blood samples from patients at a sexually transmitted diseases clinic for antibody-secreting cells (ASC) against the organism that causes syphilis. ASC were detected in 30 of 32 patients with a current syphilis infection. It did not detect ASCs in five patients who were treated for syphilis.
