Epidemiology of HIV-1 infection in agricultural plantation residents in Kericho, Kenya: Preparation for vaccine feasibility studies

Article Abstract:

A cross-sectional study was performed to determine the prevalence and risk factors for HIV-1 infection among agricultural plantation residents in Kericho, Kenya. Results from the study indicated a high prevalence of HIV-1 infection among rural agricultural residents and the sex and age distribution for HIV-1 infection in the Kericho study reflected a heterosexually transmitted epidemic typical of sub-Saharan African populations.

Higher HIV-1 incidence and genetic complexity along main roads in Rakai district, Uganda

Article Abstract:

A study was carried out to determine the association between the incidence of HIV-1 infection and the genetic complexity of HIV-1 strains in 2 geographic strata within Rakai District, Uganda. HIV-1 incidence and genetic complexity are found to be associated with geographic strata and population mobility in Rakai District and are important variables to be considered in planning and recruitment of vaccine trials.

The protective effect of circumcision on HIV incidence in rural low-risk men circumcised predominantly by traditional circumcisers in Kenya: Two-year follow-up of the Kericho HIV cohort study

Article Abstract:

The association between circumcision and HIV infection is studied in a cohort of adult agricultural workers and dependents from Kericho, Kenya after two years of follow-up. It is found that circumcision offers protection from HIV infection in low-risk men living in rural Kenya, where the procedure is common and predominantly performed by traditional circumcisers.
