Ethics in subacute care

Article Abstract:

Ethical decision-making processes and theories in a subacute care setting should address issues concerning organizational and professional practice as well as managed care contracts. A subacute care facility may experience ethical problems related to its organizational structure such as unclear leadership and accountability roles. Professional practice issues concern education and experience of staff members. Ethical issues effecting managed care contracts include questions of patient autonomy and balancing cost concerns with patient needs.

Case management in subacute care

Article Abstract:

Nursing case managers arrange, coordinate, and monitor patient care services. Case management is not widely used in subacute care due to its relative newness and lack of clear expectations for case managers. A case manager can help create reduced length of stay, coordinated utilization of resources, and competitive prices for a managed care facility. Subacute care providers who utilize a case manager's expectations should improve the facility's financial structure.

Ethics in subacute care

Article Abstract:

Understanding ethical theories can help a health care facility ethics committee establish ways to resolve ethical dilemmas. Every medical situation can be analyzed in terms of ethical behavior. Normative ethics rely on one of several ethical theories, while metaethics examines the meaning of concepts such as good and bad. Health care providers must understand the distinctions between moral obligation, moral responsibility, and moral accountability.
