Nursing home care quality: a multidimensional theoretical model

Article Abstract:

A multidimensional theoretical model for nursing home care quality has been developed using focus groups in three central Missouri communities and a naturalistic inductive analysis of transcribed content. Interaction and odor emerged as two core variables along with related concepts. Three models emerged, models of nursing homes with good quality care and with poor quality care and a multidimensional model of nursing home care quality. Seven dimensions are central focus, interaction, milieu, environment, individualized care, staff, and safety. An instrument based on the model is being tested.

Verifying nursing home care quality using minimum data set quality indicators and other quality measures

Article Abstract:

Nursing home care quality can be verified through use of minimum data set (MDS) quality indicators (QIs) and other quality measures. The University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) are performing research on minimum data sets, while the Univeristy of Missouri, Columbia, is performing research on quality indicators. The studies found a strong association between the MDS QI scores, QI Observation Scoring Instrument scores, and the Independent Observable Indicators of Quality scores and the mean number of survey citations for each group.

Assessing quality of nursing home care: the foundation for improving resident outcomes

Article Abstract:

Quality indicators (QI's) can determine the quality of care in nursing homes. Researchers monitored a range of QI's in Minnesota, such as injuries, incontinence problems, weight loss, and bed sores. The 456 certified nursing facilities varied widely with respect to quality. Particular efforts should be directed towards improving quality of care within nursing homes, perhaps by using the research tools identified above.
