Explorations in the land of DNA and beyond

Article Abstract:

Matthew Meselson, a member in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Cambridge speaks about his liking for science and how the liking ended in a successful career. He discusses his research related to DNA and concludes that more evolutionary theory needs to be re-examined, providing new insights into many issues such as the causes of extinction of asexual lineages and of species that reproduce sexually.

Human stresscopin and stresscopin-related peptide are selective ligands for the type 2 corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the molecular biology of human adaptive stress responses, focusing on the activation of corticotropon-releasing hormone receptor type 2, which mediates physiological coping during the stress-recovery phase. Research on stresscopin and stresscopin-related peptide underscores their role as ligands for the maintenance of homeostasis in the aftermath of stress.

Mice lacking calsarcin-1 are sensitized to calcineurin signaling and show accelerated cardiopathy in response to pathological biomechanical stress

Article Abstract:

The calsarcin-1 negatively modulates the functions of calcineurin, such that calcineurin signaling is enhanced in striated muscles of mice that do not express calsarcin-1. The study highlights the important roles for calsarcins as modulators of calcineurin signaling and the transmission of a specific subset of stress signals leading to cardiac remodeling in vivo.
