Facts: Leprosy

Article Abstract:

Leprosy is a chronic communicable disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, which affects the skin, peripheral nerves and mucous membranes. Spread through respiratory droplets, close prolonged contact with a leprosy patient or through the placenta in the case of infants, it is diagnosed by thickened peripheral nerves, reduced sensation in hypopigmented areas of skin, and presence of bacilli in skin smears and biopsies, and can be treated with multidrug therapy.
