Fas/FADD-mediated activation of a specific program of inflammatory gene expression in vascular smooth muscle cells

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the pathophysiology of smooth muscle cell apoptosis. Topics addressed include the pathogenesis of vascular disease, the regulation of gene expression, and Fas-induced cell death.

A protective player in the vascular response to injury

Article Abstract:

The subject of the article is heme oxygenase-1, expressed during the injury enzyme. The author discusses the ability of this enzyme to reduce vasoconstriction and inhibit free radical formation and also the possibility of using heme oxygenase-1 in the future as a local therapeutic agent at the vascular injury sites.

Apoptosis subversion: HIV-Nef provides both armor and sword

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns how the HIV virus has developed evolutionary methods to avoid apoptosis, or the immune system's response to an invaded T-cell. Research suggests that HIV employs the Nef protein to trigger or block cell death as the situation requires.
