Feasibility and utility of adding disease-specific outcome measures to administrative databases to improve disease management

Article Abstract:

It is unlikely that the addition of disease-specific information to electronic databases would be a practical, valuable, or cost-effective way to guide individual patient care. Complications associated with using database-derived information for analyses on patients with arthritis are highlighted. The patient's co-existing conditions, age, or treatment expectations can complicate evaluations for one specific disease. Information on specific diseases may be valuable, however, when following general trends for that disease.

Measuring and reporting managed care performance: lessons learned and new initiatives

Article Abstract:

Several programs have been developed to evaluate the quality of care delivered by managed care organizations, hospitals, and individual health care providers. Independent assessments of these report cards have become increasingly important to verify the integrity of the data collected. An organization has developed the Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set as one way to standardize how quality should be evaluated. Improvements in how data are collected, used and analyzed are proposed.
