Female cybercadaver goes on-line; male counterpart gets a workout

Article Abstract:

The Visible Human Female has joined the Visible Human Male on the Internet. These two projects consist of X-ray and MRI images of a human female and male cadaver. The cadavers were both willed to scientific research. The bodies were extensively imaged and then frozen in gelatin. The frozen gel was sliced into extremely thin sections, which were photographed by a digital camera. The digital images were uploaded to the Internet by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The project cost $1.4 million and contains 54 gigabytes of data. The images are used to teach anatomy to students in all grades and to simulate medical procedures for doctors-in-training. Eventually the images will be linked to other information sources. Product developers who want to download the images must sign a licensing agreement with NLM and give the library a copy of the finished application.

Is it Ig nobler for science to suffer the slings & arrows of outrageous foolery?

Article Abstract:

The Ig Nobel Prizes were in the spotlight in 1997 when Britain's top science advisor criticized the award ceremony. The prizes are awarded at Harvard University around the same time as the more prestigious Nobel Prizes. However, the ceremony is often characterized by humor and irreverence. The awards were created by Marc Abrahams, who is editor of the satirical journal, the Annals of Improbable Research. The Ig Nobel prize is named after Ignatius Nobel, who is rumored to be related to Alfred Nobel.
