Surgical intensive care unit care after ovarian cancer surgery: an analysis of indications

Article Abstract:

Events during surgery for ovarian cancer appear to determine who needs intensive care after surgery. Reducing the number of women admitted to intensive care would save money; however, the presence or absence of these events should not substitute for clinical judgment. Researchers compared the characteristics of 53 women who spent less than 24 hours in intensive care after ovarian cancer surgery with those of 32 women who spent longer than 24 hours. Placement of a Swan-Ganz catheter to monitor breathing, bowel resection, and needing mechanical ventilation were associated with intensive care unit stay longer than 24 hours.

Morbidity and mortality of incontinence surgery in elderly women: an analysis of Medicare data

Article Abstract:

Incontinence surgery may be safe for elderly patients less than 80 years old. Researchers analyzed Medicare data for rates of complications and death following incontinence surgery in 66,478 women over 65 years of age. Hospital length of stay and death rates increased with age. The death rate within 30 days of surgery was 0.33% and deaths were likely to be precipitated by heart attack, stroke, blood clots in lungs or deep veins, or pneumonia. Doctors should advise patients over age 80 of the risks of incontinence surgery for their age group.
