Fight continues over Washington's failed Initiative 119
Article Abstract:
Proponents of Washington State's Initiative 119, a failed ballot proposition that would have authorized euthanasia for certain patients, have charged their opponents with using false advertising to obstruct passage of the measure. One flyer opposing Initiative 119 claimed that it would preclude family notification, jeopardize the lives of the depressed, aged, poor and homeless, and would not require special medical qualifications. The state Public Disclosure Commission has launched an investigation.

Washington state to enact new Natural Death Act
Article Abstract:
Washington's Governor Booth Gardner is expected to sign legislation that would allow people to authorize the withdrawal or withholding of life support if they become terminally ill or enter an irreversible coma or persistent vegetative state. Opponents of the law criticize ambiguous phrases that protect doctors but could harm patients. For example, the phrase 'reasonable medical judgment' could be interpreted broadly enough to allow almost any treatment.

Prise, criticism follow Oregon's first reported assisted suicides
Article Abstract:
The first physician-assisted suicide deaths reported under Oregon's right-to-die law drew predictable responses from organizations on both sides of the issue. The deaths were denounced by Physicians for Compassionate Care and praised by Compassion in Dying. A news conference included an audiotape of one 80-year-old patient with breast cancer who emphasized her desire to die.
