Fighting for support

Article Abstract:

Nurses who work in units for the mentally ill may have to accept a risk of violence in patients, but it is questionable whether they should have to accept lack of management support concerning that risk of violence. Nurses who have been attacked by patients often find that they then face criticism for having mishandled situations. They may also find that there are no provisions for safety on a ward, and that they do not have anyone to call on in an emergency. Nurses may become demotivated in these circumstances, which may worsen conditions for patients.

Missing lessons in skills training

Article Abstract:

Learning how to deal with stressful or dangerous situations is an invaluable component in nurse training, especially when dealing with mental health patients. Nurses must understand the thought processes involved in dealing with difficult situations in order to act rationally and effectively when faced with danger or stress. Role play helps nurses develop skills, while assessing dangerous situations helps prepare for events in the future. Learning to cope by using self-instructional procedures empowers nurses and helps performance.

Kiss and hell

Article Abstract:

A nurse who was sexually harassed by a doctor initially seemed to be receiving support as she sought to decide how to handle the situation, but soon found that her colleagues were not at all supportive. They seemed to judge her before hearing all the facts, and did not challenge the doctor at all. She was made to feel that the incident had been her fault, and did not feel that she had anybody in whom she could confide.
