Findings from the Miyazaki Cohort Study

Article Abstract:

The natural history of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is described. Researchers followed 1,960 Japanese people in two villages for 11 years. Twenty-seven percent tested positive for HTLV-I at the start of the study. Twenty percent had abnormal white blood cells, which is a sign that the cells were infected. Men were more likely to transmit the virus to their wives than vice versa. Transmission was also associated with high blood levels of virus. Those infected were more likely to have immune dysfunction and more likely to have anemia, kidney disease and asthma.

Suppression of skin reactivity to purified protein derivative by hepatitis C virus among HTLV-I carriers in Japan

Article Abstract:

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) may interact with the HTLV-I virus to suppress the immune system of patients infected with both viruses. In a study of 300 patients infected with one or both viruses, those infected with HCV alone did not have an immunosuppressive effect, but those with HTLV-I alone or both viruses had suppressed immune systems. Those infected with both viruses were twice as likely to have suppressed immune systems as those infected with HTLV-I alone.

Gender difference in skin reactivity to purified protein derivative among carriers of HTLV-I in Japan

Article Abstract:

Men may be more susceptible to infection with HTLV-I, according to a study of 128 Japanese men and women. This could be due to differences in immune reactions to the virus.
