From profession to commodity

Article Abstract:

Community nursing has a low profile in the minds of the people who are deciding primary-care nursing policy, despite the essential part that community nursing plays in health care provision. Health visitors now often work from within a doctor's surgery because it allows doctors to fulfill the terms of their contracts. The health visitor function is seen as a commodity to be utilized, rather than a valued profession in its own right. District nurses carry out medical services for doctors in general practice, and this gives doctors increasing power over what they do.
