Article Abstract:

The collapse of traditional mining jobs in the region of South Yorkshire, UK, has led to the area suffering from specific health and social problems, such as high unemployment, poor diet, a high level of heart-related illness and a large proportion of the population who smoke. The South Yorkshire Health Action Zone is aiming to target the health needs of young people and children in the area, offer a greater level of independence to people with a disability and tackle the issue of heart disease in the region. The UK government is committed to improving the health of the nation and has set aside a lump sum of 306 million pounds sterling to health projects.

Children's hospices wait for government rescue

Article Abstract:

Children's hospices on an average receive just 2.7 percent of income from public money, and they are forced to rely almost entirely on fundraising and charitable donations, while some resort to axe nursing posts, and close wards. The funds crisis has forced health ministers to carry out a review of all paediatric palliative care services so that a long-term strategy can be developed.
