Serum selenium values in healthy children aged 1-18 years in NE Slovenia

Article Abstract:

An examination of the serum selenium (Se) status of 71 Slovenian children aged 18 and under shows that the Se levels of these childrem rise with their age and peak when these children mature into adults. The results also show that the serum Se levels of mature teenage subjects were comparable to the serum Se values of adults in Italy and the Netherlands. Thus, the results confirm that north-eastern Slovenia is an area with normal Se supply, a fact that is not surprising given the presence of selenium-rich foods such as cereals and fish in the Slovenian diet.

Trace element transfer from the mother to the newborn - investigations on triplets of colostrum, maternal and umbilical cord sera

Article Abstract:

There is very probably an active transport mechanism for the transfer of calcium, magnesium and zinc from the mother to the foetus, according to research designed to assess the transfer of trace elements from the maternal organism to the newborn. This is also the case for rubidium. It appears that lithium, strontium and cesium follow concentration gradients. A sufficient supply of essential trace elements if vital to ensure optical development of all metabolic functions.
