Gastrointestinal tract: Part 2: The mouth and oesophagus

Article Abstract:

The form and the major function of the mouth and oesophagus are described. The mouth's major functions are to begin the mechanical and chemical digestion of food and to start it on its journey through the gastrointestinal tract and the oesophagus's main function is simply to conduct food from the mouth to the next processing area in the gastrointestinal tract, the stomach.

Gastrointestinal tract: Part 4: The small intestine

Article Abstract:

A series on the human gastrointestinal tract that describes the form and function of the small intestines is presented. Food moves relatively slowly along the small intestine that is 3.5 cm in diameter and lies in the central and lower abdomen while the small intestine is where much of the food digestion and absorption takes place in the body.

Article Abstract:

A brief description of the large intestine along with its function, structure, movement within the colon, functions of the colon and defecation is illustrated. It is a tube about 1.5m long and 6cm in diameter, making it shorter and wider than the small intestine and comprises the caecum, ascending colon, sigmoid colon, rectum and anal canal.
