Get the massage

Article Abstract:

Massage is gaining widespread acceptance as a complementary therapy in the UK, especially in cancer centres. It has been shown to have a positive effect in relieving anxiety and tension in patients in a general hospital environment, and has also been used effectively for older institutionalised patients. Patients particularly enjoy the personal attention and care which they receive as part of a massage, and some feel that relaxation continues for some time after the massage.

Relative values

Article Abstract:

Nurses can play a valuable role in supporting patients' relatives, who often feel isolated and unable to express their feelings. Nurses should not assume that relatives who seem to be coping well have no emotional needs. It is important to find out what kind of support relatives require and to ensure that this is constantly re-evaluated. Nurses should focus on listening, and should not feel that they need to be able to offer a solution to relatives' problems.

District nurses' referrals to home-based palliative nursing services

Article Abstract:

The timing of district nurse referrals to the palliative care services offered by the Marie Curie Nursing Service were examined. Most district nurses did not refer a patient to the Marie Curie Nursing Service until the final stages of a terminal illness. The study showed that district nurses need to be educated that any patient in great pain who is in home care may make use of the Marie Curie Nursing Service.
