Going it alone; it's getting more difficult for physicians to practice in the classic way, consultants say

Article Abstract:

The growth of managed care and changes in the resource based relative scale are making it more difficult for physicians to launch solo practices. Since managed care groups have a lock on business even in small towns, solos need to do a certain amount of homework in order to discover the few opportunities that exist. They should start by determining demand for their specialties in localities where they want to practice. Then they should affiliate themselves with a hospital - HMOs are desirable - or try to buy an existing practice.

You pay for what you get: management firms offer physicians capital and administrative help - at a price

Article Abstract:

Management consultants can aid a practice on specific issues, but they are expensive and their own profit motives may adversely influence their decisions regarding a medical practice. However, they can be useful in getting managed care contracts, managing a growing clinic or locating capital for long-term development. The services and strategies of a number of large management companies are described, such as CareMark International Inc.
