Group questions, U.S. defends nuclear weapons plant safety (Physicians for Social Responsibility, Department of Energy)
Article Abstract:
A Physicians for Social Responsibility report criticized government research that concluded that the nuclear weapons industry does not pose excessive health dangers. The report was based on an evaluation of about 120 epidemiologic studies, which the Energy department conducted or sponsored over a 30 year period. The report described the studies as 'flawed' and 'unreliable'. Paul L. Zimmer, the Energy Department's assistant secretary for the environment, safety and health, asserted that Energy Department studies meet the highest scientific standards.

New ads say AIDS can hit anywhere
Article Abstract:
America Responds to AIDS, an advertising campaign sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Resources, targets persons who may not believe themselves at risk. The television, radio and print ads feature messages for teenagers, women and residents of rural areas. However, critics claim the program fails to provide concrete advice, such as the need for condoms. Members of the audience are told to call the AIDS hot line run by the Centers for Disease Control for information.
