HIV/AIDS risk reduction counseling for alcohol using sexually transmitted infections clinic patients in Cape Town, South Africa

Article Abstract:

A randomized intervention trial is conducted to test the behavioral risk reduction counseling intervention for use in sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinics in southern Africa. The results have shown that HIV prevention counseling intervention reduced HIV transmission risks for up to 6 months in the STI clinic population and the effects are sustained with structural interventions to reduce alcohol use in sexual contexts and support risk reduction behavior changes over the long-term.

Can highly active antiretroviral therapy reduce the spread of HIV?: A study in a township of South Africa

Article Abstract:

The proportion of people eligible for combination antiretroviral therapy and the effect of providing highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) on the spread of HIV-1 under World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines in a South African township with a high prevalence of HIV-1 are examined. The population impact of HAART for reducing HIV-1 may be small under the WHO guidelines but the strengthening of the conventional preventive efforts may help in curbing the spread of HIV-1.
