Prophylaxis for opportunistic infections among HIV-infected patients receiving medical care

Article Abstract:

Many HIV patients are not receiving adequate treatment to prevent opportunistic infections. A survey of four hospital-based HIV clinics in New York City found that most patients received preventive treatment for Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) but many did not receive preventive treatment for Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC). Blacks were less likely to receive preventive treatment for MAC. Nevertheless, the percentage of patients receiving preventive treatment has increased substantially since the US Public Health Service first recommended such treatment in 1995.

Long-term therapeutic strategies in HIV

Article Abstract:

Doctors who treat HIV patients can adopt the model used by those who treat cancer patients. More effective AIDS drugs are prolonging the lives of HIV patients, turning HIV infection into a long-term, chronic disease. A treatment model based on cancer is described.
