HONG KONG: SECURITIES COMMISSION'S WORK IN 2001

Article Abstract:

The Securities & Futures Commission (SFC) said stock transaction, settlement and payment could be conducted electronically in two years as the SFC is bringing in a new system to allow direct electronic processing. The SFC's goal is to eventually make the process of stock trading and settlement "paperless". In addition, the chairman of the SFC, Mr. Andrew Sheng said they were studying the possibility of bringing down the 35% takeover trigger point. In 2000, the SFC is also focusing on the following topic: 1) releasing a consultation paper on investor compensation arrangement 2) issuing a code of ethics for share registrars 3) bringing in online stock trading regulation by April/May 4) increasing coordination with the government on corporate governance

RANSOM: Customer Data

Article Abstract:

Motorola has told independent dealers that they will lose their license to sell Radius, the company's popular two-way pagers, unless they turn over their proprietary customer data. Independent dealers, among them Jules Neuringer president of Portronix Communications, are concerned that Motorola may use this customer information to rapidly set up their own e-commerce operations.
