Health promotion by numbers

Article Abstract:

The concept of giving fixed sums to general practitioners (GPs) providing screening and health promotion programs is in theory a very good one, with benefits for both patients and GPs. However, payment often depends on whether the GP has managed to provide services such as smear tests and immunization to a certain percentage of the practice population. If target figures are not met, it is possible that the health promotion programs will not be offered, because there is no financial incentive to do so, a situation which is detrimental to patients.

Teamwork: the final frontier in primary care

Article Abstract:

The importance of primary care has grown as populations increase and prevention of disease becomes a major issue. Immunization of children was undertaken by school nurses in an attempt at frontline care. Creating a team of primary nurses and community nurses to work in partnership with doctors has been hampered by factors such as a lack of recognised pay structure and a certain amount of inflexibililty on behalf of both parties. Primary care nurses need to focus their attention on public health, rather than individual patients.

Paths to effective teamwork in primary care settings

Article Abstract:

Primary health care teams (PHCTs) have been operating in the UK for some time, but they do not necessarily always being about effective teamworking. There are still many ways in which practice nurses work differently from community nurses, and they have separate employment and payment systems. However, improvements have been taking place over recent years as a result of initiatives designed to encourage teamworking in primary care. There is now a generally positive approach to creating closer links within nursing teams.
