Help wanted: participants for clinical trials

Article Abstract:

Six cancer centers received $5.7 million in grants in 2003 to develop innovative ways of recruiting cancer patients for clinical trials. Clinical trials are used to evaluate medical treatments. Many patients don't know about clinical trials they may be eligible for or may have problems with transportation that prevent them from traveling to a large hospital. Ethnic groups may have cultural or language barriers that prevent them from participating.

Researchers seek resuscitative edge for improving cardiac arrest survival

Article Abstract:

Doctors are investigating two methods of improving the outcome of people in cardiac arrest. One is an automated external defibrillator (AED), which is a device that can detect cardiac arrest and then shock the heart to restore a proper heart beat. The other is a new way of doing CPR by giving patients fewer breaths. This prevents hyperventilation, which can actually be bad for the patient.
