Hepatocyte transplantation

Article Abstract:

Hepatocyte transplantation may be used to treat certain liver diseases or serve as a temporary aid while the patient waits for a liver transplant. Hepatocytes are liver cells and a 1998 study found that transplanting liver cells into a girl with Crigler-Najjar syndrome was partially effective in controlling her symptoms. This liver disease causes excessive blood levels of bilirubin, which is normally metabolized by the liver. The most important result of the study was that the transplanted liver cells continued to function for more than 9 months.

The budd-chiari syndrome

Article Abstract:

Heptic venous outflow obstruction at level of the hepatic venules, the large hepatic veins, the inferior vena cava or the right atrium, results in a heterogeneous group of disorder, called budd-chiari syndrome. In the early stages of this disease, portal venous perfusion of the liver decreased, and may result in portal venous thrombosis.

Hepatic diseases -- hitting the target with inhibitory RNAs

Article Abstract:

RNA silencing may be used to treat some liver diseases such as autoimmune hepatitis and hepatitis B. RNA silencing uses small pieces of RNA to degrade messenger RNA. This prevents the production of specific proteins. In the case of hepatitis B, RNA silencing would destroy viral messenger RNA.
