The ELAC2 gene has shown significant susceptibility for hereditary prostate cancer, suggesting it may play a key role in identifying individuals at risk. Sequence similarity between this gene and DNA interstrand crosslink repair proteins offers a promising area for investigation of this disease.

Researchers are using animal models to determine if drugs that block oncogene products could be used to treat cancer. One mouse study shows that a doxycycline-inducible Ras mutation caused tumors but the tumors regressed when doxycycline was removed from the water supply.

Intra-articularly localized bacterial DNA containing CpG motifs has been found to bring on arthritis. DNA from Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and oligonucleotides containing CpG was injected directly into knee joints of mice of various strains.
