Preventing stroke among blacks: the challenges continue

Article Abstract:

Aspirin may be better than ticlopidine for preventing a second stroke in African-American stroke patients, according to a study published in 2003. African-Americans have a higher risk of stroke than whites, perhaps because they are more likely to have high blood pressure or diabetes. This study made a special attempt to enroll African-American stroke patients and may be the largest study of these patients to date.

The Protective Effect of Moderate Alcohol Consumption on Ischemic Stroke

Article Abstract:

Moderate alcohol consumption appears to protect against stroke. Researchers analyzed drinking habits in 677 people who had had a stroke and 1,139 healthy people from the same community. Drinking up to two alcoholic drinks per day reduced the risk of stroke by half. However, those who drank seven or more drinks per day had about three times the risk of stroke.
