Hospital diagnoses, Medicare charges, and nursing home admissions in the year when older persons become severely disabled

Article Abstract:

Hospital-based interventions to reduce the disability associated with several diseases could reduce health care costs. Researchers interviewed 6,070 people annually and analyzed hospitalization rates and Medicare charges when any participant developed a disability. Seventy-two percent of those who developed a sudden disability were hospitalized in the year of the disability compared to 48.6% of those who developed a progressive disability. Only 6 diseases accounted for two-thirds of the hospitalizations, including stroke, hip fracture, heart failure and cancer.

Patterns of functional decline at the end of life

Article Abstract:

Elderly people will experience differences in functional disability before death depending on what their medical condition is, according to a study of 14,456 elderly people. Victims of sudden death had no disability even in the last month of life whereas those who were frail became disabled in the final year of life. Cancer patients and those with organ failure became disabled in the last three months of life.
