Criminal investigations add to legal woes for tobacco firms; probes expected to bolster tobacco control, regardless of outcome

Article Abstract:

Two federal grand juries are investigating the tobacco industry. The case against Philip Morris Companies Inc involves alleged securities fraud. Another probe is investigating whether tobacco executives perjured themselves before Congress. Should the investigations lead to court cases and then convictions, the backlash to the industry could be financially substantial and increase the move towards greater control of tobacco products.

Anti-tobacco lawsuits

Article Abstract:

Lawsuits against tobacco companies could be the most effective way to decrease tobacco use since federal agencies have relaxed efforts to enact anti-smoking regulations.
