AMA Code of Medical Ethics a link to our past

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association (AMA) established an Institute for Ethics at a March 1997 conference. The institute will examine the role of ethics in medical policy and help develop ethical guidelines for genetics, physician practice, managed care and end-of-life issues. The institute also will contribute a monthly column to the AMA's weekly American Medical News publication. An AMA survey has found widespread public concern about ethics and medical care.

Hope on hold

Article Abstract:

The development of antiretroviral drugs has raised hopes that HIV will soon become clinically manageable. Some patients have difficulty or are unable to adhere to a strict, multidrug treatment regimen, however, leading some doctors and healthcare facilities to withhold treatment for some individuals. Those individuals are usually of a low socioeconomic status, raising concerns that the poorest, most troubled patients could categorically be denied treatment.

Who will shape medicine's future? Medical profession's strong voice needed to put patients before profits

Article Abstract:

The trend toward a fusion of medicine and business could be beneficial to the health care industry, yet the potential is increased for innovations that are cost-effective but medically ineffective. It is important that physicians, through organized medicine, maintain a strong voice as patient advocates and problem solvers. Physicians should strive for a balance between the moral and ethical aspects of medicine and its budgetary requirements.
