Idiopathic biliary ductopenia in adults without symptoms of liver disease

Article Abstract:

Some cases of biliary ductopenia appear to be relatively benign. This condition is caused by a reduction in the number of bile ducts in the liver and it often causes cirrhosis. In a study of 24 patients with biliary ductopenia, all had no symptoms of liver disease except elevated liver enzymes. All had been diagnosed by liver biopsy. In three patients, a second biopsy 3 to 9 years later showed that the disease had not progressed. Five patients were treated with ursodiol, four of which had all liver functions return to normal.
